Every year the festival brings togerther marine vessels from Vyborg, St. Petersburg, Leningrad region and Finland, is has become a kind of hallmark of the city.
The main event of the festival is a sailing regatta. The programme includes show performance by children sailing section, the parade of sails, surfing competitions with a paddle, competitions of water motorcycles, boat races around the fountain, sailing sports competition "The Cup of Finn class veterans".
In various years, within the frames of the event the festival of Celtic culture, the international jazz festival "The Serenades of Vyborg Castle", All-Russia tournament "The White Nights" of radio-controlled models of seaplanes were held.
In 2010 the sailing regatta of cruiser yachts of the maritime festival "The Sails of Vyborg" took place jointly with the international regatta "The Cup of Baltic Sea."
This year, the regatta of cruiser yachts of the maritime festival "The Sails of Vyborg" is dedicated to the 300-th anniversary of the victory of Russian fleet under the command of Peter the Great at Cape Gangut in 1714 and represents one of the celebration events held by the Government of St. Petersburg, together with Sailing Training Association of Finland (STAF).
